2022

Claudia Lu (MS student) receives the Henry A. Jastro Graduate Research Award (CAES, UC Davis)

Claudia Lu (MS student) is awarded the 2022-23 Kratzer, Ogasawara & Vohra award (Dept. Animal Science, UC Davis)

Claudia Lu (MS student) receives an Ursula Knight Abbott Research Travel Grant, which she will use to spend time learning research analysis methods in the lab of Dr. Jennifer Van Os (Univ. Wisconsin-Madison)

Cirenio Hisasaga (PhD student) received a graduate scholarship from the Delmarva Poultry Association

Claudia Lu (MS student) and  Cirenio Hisasaga (PhD student) received awards from the Western Poultry Scholarship and Research Foundation. Claudia’s scholarship is sponsored by the Luda Rico Deluca, george Petrusich, Sr., Albert & Beverl Zacky, Don Wharton, Manual Thomas and Willie Benedetti endowments; Cirenio received awards from the William Austin, Richard & Jennabelle Leach, Don Bell, and Francine Bradly endowments.

Nicole Ng (undergraduate student; independent research) receives 2nd place in the Undergraduate Research Poster – Division 1 Contest at the 35th MANRRS Conference in Jacksonville, FL. Nicole was one of 6 UC Davis students to receive funding from Valent to attend the conference.

Allison Pullin (PhD student) is awarded the Certificate of Excellence for the oral presentation she gave at the International Poultry Science Forum (IPSF) in Atlanta. The Certificate of Excellence is given “in recognition for an outstanding graduate student research presentation at the annual meeting of the Southern Poultry Science Society”.

2021 

– Allison Pullin (PhD student) tied for 1st place in the student poster competition held as part of the Iowa Egg Industry Symposium (Ames, IA)

Claudia Lu (MS student) receives the NSRT Fellowship for international students from the Animal Biology Graduate Group, UC Davis. 

Cirenio Hisasaga (PhD student) is awarded the National Institutes of Health-Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (NIH-IMSD) Fellowship

Cirenio Hisasaga (PhD student) receives the competitive NSF Undergraduate Preparation Fellowship

Lindsey Broadus (PhD student) was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for her research from the Poultry Science Association (https://poultryscience.org/About-Awards-2021)

– Allison Pullin received a Travel Award from UC Davis Graduate Studies to present at the 8th International Conference on the Assessment of  Animal Welfare at the Farm and Group Level (WAFL 2021), which will be held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

– Allison Pullin, Lindsey Broadus & Cirenio Hisasaga(PhD students) each received a scholarship from the Western Poultry Scholarship and Research Foundation.

2020

– Lindsey Broadus (PhD student) received  the Kratzer, Ogasawara, Vohra Scholarship from the Department of Animal Science, UC Davis.

– Lindsey Broadus (PhD student) and Allison Pullin (PhD student) were each awarded a Jastro-Shields Award through the Animal Behavior Graduate Group! The competitive  awards will allow them to further expand their dissertation research questions. 

– Allison Pullin (PhD student) received a scholarship from the Western Poultry Scholarship and Research Foundation. This is her third time being honored with this award.

2019

 

– Christina Rufener (Post-doc) received funding form the ISAE Congress Attendance Fund  to present work from her PhD at the Annual Congress of the International Society for Ethology (ISAE), which is held in Bergen, Norway.  

– Brittany Wood (MS student) received the  Ursula Abbott Travel Award to present her research at the 2019 Poultry Science Association’s Annual Meeting, which is held in Montreal, Canada.

-Zahira Budeguer (Undergraduate student) received the Jones-Hamilton Co. Undergraduate Student Travel Award from the Poultry Science Association (PSA) to present findings from her independent research project at the 2019 PSA Annual Meeting, which is held in Montreal, Canada.

Lindsey Broadus (PhD student) and Allison Pullin (PhD student) each received Hart, Cole, Goss Fellowship funding to continue their dissertation research over the summer.

Lindsey Broadus (PhD student) and Allison Pullin (PhD student) were each awarded a Jastro-Shields Award through the Animal Behavior Graduate Group! The competitive  awards will allow them to further expand their dissertation research questions.

Allison Pullin (PhD student) received an  Ursula Abbott Travel Award to present her work at the Annual Congress of the International Society for Applied Ethology, which is held on Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Lindsey Broadus (PhD student) received Graduate Program Fellowship from the Animal Biology Graduate Group.

–  Dr. Essam Abdelfattah (post-doc) was recognized for his nomination for the UC Davis Outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar  Award.

Allison Pullin (PhD student) received a scholarship from the Western Poultry Scholarship and Research Foundation, as well as the 2018 Western Poultry Scholarship and Research Foundation Graduate Student Poster Presentation Award at the Pacific Egg and Poultry Association (PEPA) Annual Convention.

Dr. Essam Abdelfattah (post-doc) received a competitive travel award to attend the 2018 Science Talk conference.

2017

– Brittany Wood (MS student) received the Jastro-Shields Award.

-Dr. Essam Abdelfattah (post-doc) was selected to participate in the UC Davis Leaders for the Future program.

-Dr. Essam Abdelfattah (post-doc) is the recipient of the 2017 UC Davis Community Service Award. Essam also received a conference travel award from the Postdoctoral Scholar Association at UC Davis.

Dr. Maja Makagon received an Academic Federation Research Travel Award.

-Ashley Birakos (undergraduate intern) received the award for Best Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation at the 13th North-American Regional Meeting of the International Society for Applied Ethology, Ames, IA, and the conference travel award from the Undergraduate Research Center at UC Davis (May 2017). 

– Karina Hissen (undergraduate intern) received the 2017 Student Merit Award for Outstanding Poultry Student and the award for best Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation at the Pacific Egg and Poultry Association (PePa).

-Jordan Tonooka (undergraduate thesis student) received a conference travel award from the Undergraduate Research Center at UC Davis (March 2017).

2016

– Brittany Wood (incoming MS student) received the 2016 Arthur W. Perdue M.S. Fellowship.

Sydney Baker (MS student) received the 2016 Student Merit Award for Outstanding Poultry Student and the 2016 Western Poultry Scholarship and Research Foundation PePa Student Poster Presentation Award.

2015

– Dr. Essam Abdelfattah was selected to participate in the FUTURE program.

– Dr. Maja Makagon received the 2015 New Investigator Award from the International Society for Applied Ethology. Award details available here.

– Christopher Byrd (MS student) was honored by the Department of Animal Science, Purdue University with 3 awards: 2015 Featherstone Early Graduate Career Award, 2015 Featherstone Outstanding M.S. Student Award and 2015 Featherstone Off-Compus Training Award. Award details available here.

– M. Douglas (high school intern) received 3rd place in the High School Division – Animal Science at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at Purdue University
